War Veteran's Travel Pass: frequently asked questions
1. Who is eligible for the War Veteran Travel Pass?
The War Veteran Travel Pass is issued to Victorian war veterans:
- Who have undertaken war / peacemaking / peacekeeping service overseas AND
- Who are in receipt of a Department of Veterans’ Affairs
(DVA) gold or white card or documented evidence of ongoing or lump sum compensation from DVA for an injury/illness related to this service AND
- Who have had confirmed by their treating Doctor that due to this injury / illness related to service the veterans locomotion is limited significantly AND
- Who are residents of Victoria.
2. What is classified as approved overseas war service?
Documentary evidence of overseas war service from one of the following theatres of war:
- World War 2 03/09/1939 – 28/04/1952
- Korea 27/06/1950 – 19/04/1956
- Malaya 29/06/1950 – 30/09/1967
- Vietnam 31/07/1962 – 29/04/1975.
Or
ADF/Peacemakers: Association Papers as documentary evidence of related conflicts (but are not limited to):
- Afghanistan (War on Terror and UNMCTT)
- Africa (Sierra Leone, Namibia, Somalia, Rwanda, etc.)
- Cambodia
- East Timor
- Gulf War 1 & 2
- Iraq.
3. How do I obtain records of my overseas war service?
The Metlink Central Pass Office will not be able to assist War Veterans in obtaining documentary evidence of overseas war service. The Veteran will need to either:
a. Produce a PMKeys (an ADF HR system) printout of their service certified by an officer of the ADF.
b. Produce a record of service extract from the central Army, Navy or Air Force Records Office.
c. Although not documentary, produce their original medals which will have their name engraved on them. The Australian Service Medal or the Australian Active Service Medal will denote overseas service.
d. Call the Department of Veteran Affairs on 133 254 (metro) or 1800 555 254 (regional) and request for a letter confirming overseas war/ peacemaking / peacekeeping service.
4. I’m currently in possession White / Gold DVA Gold Repatriation Health card or ongoing or lump sum compensation from DVA and have served overseas, but I’m not affected in terms of locomotion issues, am I eligible for the War Veteran Travel Pass?
Unfortunately no, a treating Doctor needs to verify that due to injury / illness related to service your locomotion is limited significantly.
5. I’m not in possession of a DVA Gold or White card but do have documentary evidence of ongoing or lump sum compensation, am I eligible for the War Veteran’s Travel Pass?
Yes, if a treating Doctor verifies that due to injury / illness related to service your locomotion is limited significantly and you have undertaken war / peacemaking / peacekeeping service overseas.
6. How does the War Veteran Travel Pass work?
The War Veteran Travel Pass is a free registered myki with the pass holder’s photograph and name printed on the card. The pass holder is required to carry the War Veteran Travel Pass with them at all times while travelling on Victoria’s public transport network. War Veteran Travel Pass holders need to touch on at the beginning and touch off at the end of each journey.
7. Where can I use the War Veteran Travel Pass?
The War Veteran Travel Pass entitles the pass holder to free travel on:
- Metropolitan trains, trams and buses
- V/Line services
- urban bus services in regional cities
- regional services that have a contract or service agreement with the Department of Transport.
Free travel passes do not necessarily apply to CountryLink, Great Southern Railway, airport services, tourist railways, privately run bus services and chartered trains, trams and buses. Please check with the relevant operator before booking or travelling.
8. How do I use the myki War Veteran Travel Pass on V/Line services?
myki Free Travel Passes are valid on all V/Line train and coach services, even though myki is only operational on some V/Line rail services. Pass holders should use their myki Free Travel Pass as a ‘flash pass’ for travel on V/Line services.
9. Do myki War Veteran Travel Pass holders need to book to travel on First Class services?
All myki Free Travel Pass holders are able to access the First Class section of V/Line trains, however all First Class travel must be reserved no matter where the pass holder joins or disembarks the service. Pass holders can call 136 196 to make reservations. If a reservation has not been made a conductor may ask the pass holder to return to the economy section of the train.
10. Are War Veteran Travel Pass holders able to access V/Line coach services, which extend beyond the border?
Yes, the myki Free Travel Pass is valid on V/Line branded services.
11. Who administers the War Veteran Travel Pass?
The Metlink Central Pass Office is responsible for issuing Victoria’s public transport free travel passes, including the War Veteran Travel Pass.
12. How do I apply for the War Veteran Travel Pass?
This application form must be completed by the applicant or where the applicant is unable to complete and/or sign the form, by their guardian or agent. The completed application form is submitted to the Metlink Central Pass Office for processing.
All applications are reviewed by the Metlink Central Pass Office for eligibility. Where eligibility is unclear, the Metlink Central Pass Office may ask for more information from the applicant and/or the Department of Veteran Affairs.
13. How much does the War Veteran Travel Pass cost?
The War Veteran Travel Pass is free.
14. How do we obtain a replacement card?
The pass holder must advise the Metlink Central Pass Office as soon as possible if the Travel Pass is lost, stolen, non-operational or damaged, including if they become aware that the name or photograph is illegible. A free replacement Travel Pass will be issued.
Please note that a Statutory Declaration must be completed and submitted to the Metlink Central Pass Office for all lost or stolen travel passes.
