Melbourne is progressively making the switch to a new ticketing system called myki. While this is happening you will notice two types of ticketing equipment on the public transport network. You can choose to use either Metcard or myki to travel on Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses. The existing Metcard ticketing system can still be used and will run alongside myki until December 2012. You can continue using Metcards until advised otherwise, or you can make the switch to myki when you feel comfortable. During this time the number of myki sales and top up outlets will gradually increase. myki money or a myki pass is valid for travel on all metropolitan train, tram and bus services including V/Line services in Zone 1 + 2 to Melton and Sunbury. myki is also operating on regional bus services in Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Seymour, Warragul and the Latrobe Valley, and is also valid for travel on V/Line rail services operating wholly within the Geelong (between Lara and Marshall), Bendigo (between Eaglehawk and Kangaroo Flat) and Ballarat (between Wendoree and Ballarat) transit systems. For more information, see regional town bus ticketing. myki will progressively be rolled out on V/Line train services from Melbourne to Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Seymour and the Latrobe Valley (Traralgon, Morwell, Moe). myki pass and myki money myki is a reusable smart card that can store either a myki pass (travel days) or myki money (dollar value) and these are used to pay for your journey. When your myki money balance gets low or when your pass runs out, you just top up your card to keep travelling. You can store both myki pass and myki money in your myki at the same time. That's because myki money can be used to pay for any travel outside of your myki pass zone(s). |
