Mobility aids

Passengers who use mobility aids (wheelchairs, scooters or motorised vehicles) should consider the size of the area allocated on accessible public transport vehicles when selecting a mobility aid and planning a journey on public transport in Victoria.

Your mobility aid (wheelchair, scooter or motorised vehicle) should:

  • fit within a space of 1300mm (length) by 800mm (width)
  • be no more than 750mm wide at a height of 300mm above the ground to fit between the wheel axles of a bus.

Additionally, the total weight of yourself, your assistant and your mobility aid must be less than 300kg. This is to ensure you do not exceed the maximum weight capacity of boarding devices such as ramps.

You may be unable to travel if your mobility aid exceeds these standard wheelchair dimensions (1300mm long x 800mm wide).

Your mobility aid (wheelchair, scooter or motorised vehicle) should:

  • move backwards and fowards
  • have effective brakes to help maintain stability
  • on regional coaches, have restraint devices.

 

Your mobility aid (wheelchair, scooter or motorised vehicle) should:

  • turn 180 degrees within an area 2070mm x 1540mm
  • cross a horizontal gap up to 40mm wide
  • mount a vertical rise (bump) up to 12mm
  • cross grates in vehicles up to 13mm wide and 150mm long
  • go up and down a ramp with a 1:14 grade unassisted
  • go up and down a ramp that is less than 1520mm with a 1:8 grade 
  • go up and down a ramp with a 1:4 grade with assistance
