get on board!

get on board! is a secondary school teacher resource that helps teach students about the public transport network and their responsibilities in sharing the ride with others.

The get on board! education package contains a CD-ROM and teacher guide and is available at no cost to Victorian secondary schools.

Why young people need to get on board!

Young people often start travelling independently during their middle years of schooling, particularly to and from school.

This travel can be by train, tram, bus (either a dedicated school bus or a route bus), or a combination of the three modes.

As young people become familiar with the network and their rights and responsibilities when travelling, they can discover how easy it is to travel by train, tram or bus.

By using get on board! young people from metropolitan and country Victoria can:

  • build on their knowledge and confidence when using Victoria’s public transport network
  • consider personal safety and the importance of being aware of other passengers
  • explore the cost and benefits of using public transport.

get on board! covers key travel safety issues such as taking care when crossing:

  • roads around buses
  • railway lines, including at level crossings
  • roads to reach roadside tram stops and safety zones.

The get on board! teacher guide:

  • provides background information on the Victorian public transport network
  • includes teaching and learning strategies clearly linked to the information within get on board!
  • does not assume prior teacher knowledge on issues and procedures related to public transport use
  • provides links to relevant web sites and other resources.
