Metlink Adventures

Metlink Adventures is a public transport education program that helps Victorian primary school teachers educate their students about travelling by train, tram and bus.

There are four parts to Metlink Adventures that allow students to link experiences in the classroom with real-life:

  • a Classroom Activities book
  • a visit from a Metlink Educator
  • take home Family Guides for each student
  • public transport support for a class excursion.

Classroom Activities book

The Metlink Adventures Classroom Activities book provides activity ideas and support materials for primary school teachers.

This booklet contains activities for Travelling safely (VELS Levels 1-2), Travelling with others (VELS Level 3) and Travelling solo (VELS Level 4) that are designed to prepare students for their excursion using public transport.

The focus is on understanding:

  • Why should we use public transport?
  • How will we get there?

Activities are supported by Resource Sheets and Activity Sheets and supplied on the book's accompanying CD-ROM.

Metlink Educator visits

Metlink Educators can visit your school for an interactive session with the students.

This session is conducted before the excursion and focuses on how to share the ride safely. It covers safe and responsible use of public transport relevant to the students at their level.

The Metlink Educator needs 15 minutes to set up in a dedicated space. Sessions run for 45 minutes.

Take home Family Guides are given to students after they participate in these sessions.

Public transport support for a class excursion

Use the journey planner to plan your class excursion on public transport. Metlink Adventures can provide some subsidised travel (conditions apply).

Metlink can cover travel for one class of up to 35 primary school students and six supervising adults to travel on Melbourne's metropolitan trains and trams for one excursion journey as part of Metlink Adventures.

At least three weeks notice is required to arrange excursions (not including school and public holidays).

A maximum of three classes for each participating school per year are entitled to the subsidised travel.
