Accessible trams

Low-floor trams have two allocated spaces for passengers using wheelchairs or mobility aids. This area is inside the double-door marked with a wheelchair symbol. These trams also have specially marked call buttons for passengers using wheelchairs or mobility aids.

In the case of the “Citadis” trams (which normally operate on Route 109), these buttons alert the driver to activate the “bridging plate” at the door threshold to bridge the gap between the tram and the platform.

On the “Combino” trams, the call button overrides the automatic door closing mechanism to allow sufficient time to alight. The “Combino” trams also have an external door release – a blue button – to assist passengers using wheelchairs to board by overriding the automatic door closing mechanism.

Getting on and off low-floor trams is easy for all passengers. In addition to providing wheelchair access, the trams also have colour-contrasting, grab handles and step edging for people with a visual impairment, and improved customer service information via automated announcements and electronic displays.

Accessible tram stops

People using wheelchairs or mobility aids can currently access low-floor trams from platform stops on Routes 6, 8, 12, 48, 59, 70, 75, 86, 96, 109, and the Collins Street Extension (See below for more details). There are more than 100 accessible platform-style tram stops on the Melbourne tram network to complement low-floor trams and provide improved access.

Different types of accessible tram stops are also being introduced including platform stops and kerb access stops.

The Department of Transport in conjunction with Yarra Trams and local councils are undertaking programs to increase the number of accessible trams stops.

Tram timetables that depict the accessibility symbol indicate that wheelchair accessible services are available to customers.

Catching the tram

Low-floor trams ensure wheelchair passengers can board from any of the wheelchair-accessible platform stops on the tram network.

Major work has been carried out to stops throughout the network to make them wheelchair-accessible.
Position your wheelchair on the platform and enter the tram through the double-doors identified by the wheelchair symbol.
