Glossary of terms and phrases

Accessible service: Service operated by a low-floor/wheelchair accessible bus or tram.

Authorised Officer: Staff employed by public transport operators to ensure that passengers comply with ticketing and behavioural requirements while using public transport. They are accredited by the Director of Public Transport, and have the power to ask you to show your Metcard on all public transport premises and vehicles including when you have just left a public transport vehicle or premises. They also have the power to ask for your name and address, produce documents confirming that the information given is correct or arrest you for the length of time it takes to obtain such information.

Coin only: A ticket machine that does not accept notes.

Concession card: A card entitling passengers to discount travel. Concession cards must be carried when travelling on a concession ticket on public transport or the holder could be fined.

Connecting service: A train, tram or bus service that is scheduled to meet another service.

Connex Melbourne: Public transport operator for trains in Metropolitan Melbourne.

DOT: Department of Transport. The Government department responsible for public transport.

Host Station: A railway station with customer service staff during the morning peak period.

Low-floor: A bus or tram service that is accessible by wheelchair users.

Metlink: A partnership of Melbourne’s train, tram and bus operators, Metlink provides customers with a ‘one-stop-shop’ for information about services, fares and ticketing. Metlink is also responsible for introducing new way-finding signage across the network.

Metcard: The name for tickets used on metropolitan Melbourne's train, tram and bus services.

NightRider: The after midnight bus service running between Melbourne city centre and the outer suburbs.

Premium Station: A station that is staffed from first train to last, every day of the year. Premium Stations have a customer service centre, where passengers can get tickets, timetables, information and change for vending machines and payphones. Most Premium Stations have passenger facilities such as enclosed waiting areas and toilets.

Superstop: A tram stop offering improved customer information and facilities, such as ticket vending machines and wheelchair access.

Terminus: A bus or tram route start or finishing point.

V/Line Passenger: Public transport operator for regional train and coach services in Victoria.

Validate: Inserting a Metcard into a validator machine. This must be done each time you board a bus, tram or enter a train station platform.

Validator: The machines that validate Metcards.

Yarra Trams: Public transport operator for trams in metropolitan Melbourne.

Zone: Metropolitan Melbourne’s public transport network is divided into two zones. The cost of a journey depends on which zones are being travelled in.

Zone overlap: A border area between two zones in which Metcards for either zone can be used.
