Western Young People’s Independent Network (WYPIN)

Metlink has worked with WYPIN on a peer education program to teach culturally and linguistically diverse young people how to use public transport safely and responsibly.

As a result, a visual resource kit called Train! Tram! Bus! was developed.

The kit is delivered to newly arrived people by young community leaders with the help of Authorised Officers.

The kit comprises several visual aids, including flash cards, maps and games covering a range of topics on how to use public transport:

  • types of public transport
  • travelling across zones
  • buying Metcards
  • travelling safely on public transport
  • acting responsibly on public transport.

To order a Train! Tram! Bus! kit contact Metlink Education via email [email protected] or call 9619 5241.

The kit is $100 (or $50 for non-profit organisations).

(L-R) Toruna Luxmi Ujoodah, Bernie Carolan (Metlink CEO), May Joy Toke and Dayane Stanovic (WYPIN) with the kit.

State Library of Victoria

Metlink joined forces with the State Library of Victoria to support the library's educational programs and increase access to its collections.

Through this partnership, Metlink delivers public transport information to primary and secondary students about safe travel and the benefits of using public transport.

Metlink can cover the cost of public transport travel for school groups from disadvantaged metropolitan government schools for their visit to the State Library of Victoria.

In June, as part of The Medieval Imagination: Illuminated Manuscripts program, Authorised Officers from Melbourne's transport operators discussed responsible and safe public transport travel with school groups before they made their way to the library to see the exhibition.

Altona College year eights visited the State Library as part of the Medieval Adventure program.

Metlink and the State Library designed a pilot program, which assists young people to access and learn more about resources available to them at public libraries.

Staughton College year nines and grades sixes from Melton South Primary took part in the program throughout October and November, which included a writing workshop at their local library, a tour of the State Library, the opportunity to meet Australian authors and a talk on safe and responsible public transport travel from Connex Authorised Officers.

Staughton College year nines wait for their train to the State Library.

Connex Authorised Officer Shay, accompanied the Staughton College students on their journey.
