Calder Park Train Stabling Facility
Timeframe
Start: May 2014
Complete: Mid-2015
What's happening?
From 8pm Friday 12 December until 4am Monday 15 December 2014, the project team tested the new rail track, overhead wiring and train signalling equipment for the new stabling facility.
Project description
A new train stabling facility will be built alongside the existing Sunbury line rail corridor, between Calder Park Drive and Holden Road (behind Calder Park Raceway) to provide stabling for six trains.
Stabling trains in one location eliminates the need for trains to travel long distances without passengers before commencing services.
The project will improve on-time reliability of Sunbury line services as fewer trains will need to be transferred from other lines, particularly for the first services in the morning.
Stage 1 of the project will deliver:
-
stabling roads, signals and overhead lines to store six trains
-
an amenities building and carpark for train drivers and maintenance staff
-
an upgrade to the power substation
-
access road and security entrance to facility lighting, and
-
CCTV coverage around the yard and perimeter fence.
Project benefits
The new train stabling and future maintenance facility works will ensure that:
-
trains can be stored at Calder Park, improving the efficiency of the Sunbury line
-
the maintenance and daily cleaning of Melbourne's metropolitan train fleet will be more efficient, and
-
in conjunction with eight other stabling sites around Melbourne, the capacity of the entire rail network can be progressively improved
