Mernda Rail Extension
Project description
The State Government has committed to extending the South Morang rail line to Mernda to cater for the significant population growth in Melbourne’s north.
The rail extension will feature:
- A duplicated rail line between South Morang and Mernda
- Full grade separations with no new level crossings
- A new station at Mernda, integrated into the new Mernda town centre
- One additional station between Mernda and South Morang at a location to be determined in consultation with the community
- Bus interchanges
- Bike and car parking
- Train stabling (parking)
Project Update
Public Transport Victoria is currently undertaking planning work for the rail extension.
The 2015-16 State Budget allocated $9 million for planning and further investigation of corridor demand and capacity, environmental and site conditions, community engagement, requirements definition, design development, economic assessment, planning approvals and land acquisition.
Community engagement
The Mernda Rail is currently in the planning phase and community consultation has commenced.
