New trains

The 2015-16 State Budget included a $2 billion investment in new trains and trams for the network.

  • $1.3 billion for 37 new, high-capacity metropolitan trains with a 50 per cent local content requirement
  • $257 million for 21 new VLocity regional carriages to be built at Dandenong
  • $90 million for five new X’Trapolis trains to be built in Ballarat
  • $75 million to extend the life of more than 70 Comeng trains in the existing metropolitan fleet

The 2013-14 State Budget included $176.1 million for a new order of eight X’Trapolis trains. The order of eight trains is in addition to an existing order of seven X’Trapolis trains, which was completed ahead of schedule in June 2013.

VLocity carriages

The 2015-16 State Budget includes a $257 million for 21 new VLocity regional carriages to be built at Dandenong

This is on top of a $207 million order for 43 new VLocity train carriages for the V/Line network.

The new V/Line carriages are being built by Victorian train manufacturer Bombardier at its Dandenong South factory.

The new carriages will help V/Line to meet increased service levels when the Regional Rail Link opens.

High capacity trains

The 2015-16 State Budget included $1.3 billion for 37 new, high-capacity metropolitan trains with a 50 per cent local content requirement.

The trains are planned to be able to carry 1100 passengers, with the ability to be lengthened to carry more than 1600 passengers if needed.

High-capacity trains will help to accommodate future growth and are a key part of Public Transport Victoria’s Network Development Plan.
