Railway line at Epsom Station

Epsom and Eaglehawk rail improvements

A new station for Epsom and service improvements for Eaglehawk

Cost

$7.76 million

Timeframe

Start: June 2014
Complete: October 2014

What’s happening

The new Epsom Station opened on Sunday 12 October 2014.

Epsom Station features 100 free car parking spaces, a drop-off zone and bike racks. Bus Route 10 also operates via Epsom Station.

Eaglehawk Station also received additional services in the timetable change, the new services commenced on Monday 13 October 2014.

Project background

The new Epsom Station is located on the Echuca line, on the corner of Howard and Station streets. The station is fully accessible and features:

  • parking for 100 cars
  • two drop-off car parks
  • two shelters
  • nine bicycle hoops, and
  • a bus bay on Station Street.

In 2013, the Howard Street pedestrian level crossing was also upgraded to a fully accessible and safer active level crossing.

Infrastructure at Eaglehawk Station on the Swan Hill line has been modified to facilitiate an increase in services to the station, allowing for one morning Bendigo-Melbourne service to be extended to commence at Eaglehawk. This brings the total number of services each weekday to eight.

Project benefits

Epsom Station provides people in Epsom with a passenger rail connection for the first time in over 40 years, giving them an alternative to using their car.

Fewer people will need to use Bendigo Station, freeing up parking at the station.

Improved travel times to and from Bendigo for residents of Epsom, compared with current bus journey times.

The new station also improves connections to Melbourne for the people of Epsom, allowing them to catch trains directly to and from Melbourne, reducing the need for Melbourne-bound travellers to catch the bus or drive to Bendigo for a connecting service.

The station modifications at Eaglehawk include building a new Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant ramp to access the pedestrian crossing and a new drivers pathway. These works will enable increased capacity at Eaglehawk Station for future service improvements.
