Project description

A $100 million restoration and upgrade of Flinders Street Station is being undertaken to repair the building’s exterior and clock tower, and fix the roof.

Project benefits

The upgrade works will improve station access and ameneties for the thousands of people who use the station every day. These works include:

  • improving access to the station precinct and between platforms, including addressing growing pedestrian congestion issues at the west end of the station
  • installing next-generation myki equipment and additional myki readers
  • upgrading lighting and installing new passenger information displays
  • rebuilding toilet facilities
  • revamping ticket offices at the Flinders Street and Elizabeth Street entrances
  • installing a new timetabling board facing Federation Square and the tram interchange.

Heritage restoration works to be undertaken include:

  • repairing and restoring the façade and roof
  • reinforcing the building's structures
  • restoring the heritage clock tower and heritage elements
  • repainting the building, consistent with heritage requirements.

Heritage Victoria will be closely involved in the planning and delivery of the restoration works.
