Upcoming night works between Frankston and Moorabbin in September

Work to install new overhead power structures and wiring will be taking place in the rail corridor between Frankston Station and Moorabbin Station from 11 pm on Friday 4 September to 5am on Monday 7 September 2015 as part of the Bayside Rail Project.

Please note, these works must be carried out at night while trains are not running to ensure the safety of our workers and train users.

Buses will be replacing trains between Moorabbin and Frankston stations on Saturday 5 September and Sunday 6 September 2015.

For more information about train services or bus replacement services, please visit the Live Travel Updates page or call 1800 800 007 (6am - midnight daily).

We thank you in advance for your patience during these works.

Upgrading customer facilities at Carrum Station

Works have started at Carrum Station to install additional shelter on Platform 1 and upgrade the toilet facilities to make them more accessible for the community.

During this time, there will be some temporary fencing set up on Platform 1 and the current station toilets will be closed. Temporary toilet facilities will be provided in front of the Platform 2 station building on Station Street while these works take place.

Any disruptive construction works will be undertaken outside of peak travel times to minimise disruptions to station users as much as possible and they will not impact any services on the Frankston line.

These works are expected to be completed in October 2015.

Project description

The Bayside Rail Project is a $115 million investment to improve the reliability and capacity of the Frankston, Werribee and Williamstown lines.

Rail infrastructure is being upgraded along all three lines to allow X’Trapolis trains to operate. The project has enabled one X’Trapolis train start running on the Frankston line late last year in the busy morning peak.

Eight brand new X'Trapolis trains are currently on order and will service the Frankston, Werribee and Williamstown lines when they arrive in late 2015.

The rail infrastructure works include:

  • upgrading tracks, signals, power substations and train maintenance yards
  • upgrading the Glenhuntly tram square so that trains can pass through the level crossing at a faster speed
  • replacing overhead wiring.

Stations on the Frankston line will also be improved to become safer and more comfortable with:

  • upgrades to safety features such as the installation of safety zones and raise tactile indicators along station platforms
  • improved platform lighting and CCTV camera coverage
  • better information about train, bus and tram arrival times and service delays
  • more sheltered areas
  • additional myki readers at busy stations.

While the majority of works being carried out as part of the Bayside Rail Project are taking place on the Frankston line, rail infrastructure upgrades will also be carried out on the Werribee and Williamstown lines to allow X’Trapolis trains to operate.

This is because a number of Frankton line services become Werribee line services when they reach Flinders Street Station and the new X’Trapolis trains will be stored and maintained at the Newport Train Maintenance Facility.

Project benefits

The Bayside Rail Project will improve the reliability and capacity of the Frankston,Werribee and Williamstown lines by upgrading rail infrastructure to enable X’Trapolis trains to operate. The X’Trapolis trains are the largest and fastest trains on Melbourne’s public transport system and started running in the morning peak time on the Frankston line in October last year. There are a further eight brand new trains due to arrive on the three lines in 2015.

The project is also delivering improvements to stations along the Frankston line to increase safety and make them more comfortable for customers to use.

Customer information at stations will also be improved with the installation of new network status boards and train departure information displays.

Network status boards provide real-time information about how the public transport network is performing, including details on any expected delays, replacement services or planned service changes affecting other rail, tram or bus lines across Victoria.

New train departure information displays will also be installed on station platforms along the Frankston line to provide next service information.
